Interview: Ghasper Talks About His New EP, MGMT, & His Mima

INTERVIEW: We talked with Ghasper about his new 14-track EP and about why he loves MGMT so much.

Last week, Ghasper dropped his new Mima EP featuring some of his standout tracks from the past year like “Forgive Me”, which managed to make it to #4 on Spotify’s US Viral Charts. The EP has already amassed nearly 500,000 plays on SoundCloud and is adding to the six million streams that Ghasper established on Spotify beforehand. The 14-track project is one of the longest EP’s ever released with a runtime of close to an hour. Ghasper and I had a little chat so he could tell us a little bit about his newest project and a little bit about himself too.

Hey Ghasper, to start, how have the first few days been since your EP release?

They’ve been great, the support has been really awesome to see, especially after how long it’s been since I really released anything.

You’ve been working on this for over a year, what does the EP mean to you? What’s the message you’re trying to send?

It was mostly centered around my Grandma and Grandpa (hence the title Mima), I originally was thinking of calling it Jose y Socorro, their names, but decided on the simpler Mima. I didn’t really want it to be so blatant that it was about the death of two important people in my life, but obvious enough for the people who know me.

How would you describe your sound?

I’m not really sure at this point, I’ve done a ton of Future Bass stuff, Hip-Hop, IDM, Trap, and lately a ton of DnB and Garage. I’m kind of all over the place to be honest.

Do you feel it’s evolved over the years? I read you’ve been producing for 5 years now, has your sound changed a lot?

Yeah completely, I started trying to make a lot of Chillwave stuff and between what I’ve been making lately and what’s on the EP it’s a completely different sound, but I will say the vibe has stayed pretty consistent, seems like I’ve always written bittersweet or darker music.

When did you do the majority of the production for the EP? Has it been a long process?

Almost all the tracks on it were created and finished between 2016 and early 2017. It’s definitely been a long process but totally necessary, I’m really excited for what’s to come this year.

Which of the songs off the new EP is your favorite?

“Satellite”, “Mima”, “Lonely Tuesday” and “Pacific Coast Highway”.

What’s the vibe you’re trying to create? What do you hope people are doing or thinking when they listen?

I hope they think about whatever or whoever is important to them.

I heard that you’re a huge M83 fan, so I want to ask you, what’s your pick: Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming, Saturdays=Youth, or Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts? And why, of course.

Oh man, I am an absolute massive fan. Of these three albums it’d definitely be Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts, BUT I gotta give a shoutout to Before the Dawn Heals Us, Digital Shades and his self titled M83, seriously they’re all so incredible and got a very special place in my heart. As for why Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts? Between songs like “In Church” (including the Cyann & Benn version), “America”, “Unrecorded”, “Tsubasa”, “0078h”, it’s hard to not pick it. As a particularly emotional kid listening to that album it was hard not to be inspired by it, I would have had to really try to not be interested in it. And even though I found M83 through a Pontiac commercial using “Don’t Save Us From the Flames” (another great song) as it’s soundtrack, it wasn’t until I went online and found “America” with it’s music video that I really started becoming obsessed with Anthony Gonzalez. The album is just a masterpiece, you could listen to it anywhere and that place and time will become something to remember. I realize this was a very long answer for what was probably supposed to be a simple question, I’m sorry, aha.

What are some of your other influences?

As of late, I’ve been re-listening and rediscovering Burial a ton, that new Mt. Kimbie album is just incredible, I just got done listening to the new Rone album Mirapolis, Porches, Susumu Hirasawa, Sully, Bonobo, HudMo, Rustie, Bicep, L-VIS 1990, Missingno, Murlo, Jamie XX, and a mad amount of James Blake. Like a dumb amount of James Blake. Seriously, James Blake.

How about a few of your dream artists to work with?

Hudson Mohawke, James Blake, Jamie XX, Susumu Hirasawa and I feel like it’s almost obligatory to say Aphex Twin.

If you could describe your music making process what would it be? Do you have a specific process you stick to?

I try not to think about it too much, I’ll usually start out with finding some solid chords to loop or make some interesting drums to build around.

I know you just released your EP. but do you have plans for any new stuff? Like videos or shows?

Definitely, all of last year and some of this year was spent working on a full length album, and I’ve been collaborating a ton with my pal Gladez, we’ve got some really crazy stuff to show you guys. As far as shows go, probably a little later in the year.

To end this off, what’s something secret that not many people know about you?

I’m a total badass in Mario Odyssey, like top 400 worldwide at a couple of the challenges in it haha
