Today, after what has technically been six years, Hayden James has delivered his debut album.
In 2013 I first heard “Permission To Love,” Hayden James‘ first official release, and the song immediately struck a chord with me. That year he released a self-titled EP that received a bit of fanfare but it wasn’t until his comeback single in 2015, “Something About You,” that James’ musical stylings really started to gain some notoriety. That, as wild as it may seem, was four years ago.
Since then Hayden James has returned practically once a year to release one song. In 2016 he dropped “Just A Lover,” in 2017 he gave us “NUMB,” and in 2018 he released “Just Friends” and, then, a full six months later as the year came to a close, we got “Better Together.” All of it lead up to today and the release of Hayden James’ debut album Between Us. The album, clocking in at exactly 40 minutes, features many of James’ singles and contributions from Boy Matthews, NAATIONS, FARR, Running Touch, Panama, Elderbrook, Nat Dunn, GRAACE, and Shungudzo. It plays through as a freeing, ambient experience as James’ production enhances each of the featured vocalists.
On the album Hayden said:
“It’s finally here… my album, ‘Between Us’. I honestly didn’t think this day would come. It’s been a long journey to get here and I’m so proud of what I’ve created. Between Us is about those intimate moments in your life.. that energy you feel with someone. It’s a look at different stages of relationships – love, loss and everything in between. I dreamed of writing a record that you can press play on the first song and just let it play all the way through… no fillers – every song belonging, fitting into the story and meaning something special. I hope I’ve done this for you. To everyone that listens to my music, comes to my shows and supports me, thanks for waiting so long for this moment. I’m so excited to share this new music with you. There’s so many people that helped me get here. To everyone involved in making this record with me, thank you from the bottom of my heart. You’ve helped me realise my dream. This feels like just the beginning.”
