The electronic duo shared their second new song of the year.
“like u do” is one of those songs that you don’t exactly expect to turn into a banger. What opens as a slower, and mostly tame, love song with an overpowering 808 transforms into an electronic jam when the chorus hits and the production takes over. The New York duo of Marian Hill has found some success using this formula in the past, catapulting them to stardom with the infectious “Down” a few years back but it still feels fresh here.
The duo, comprised of producer Jeremy Lloyd and vocalist Samantha Gongol, had a bit to say about the track: “You have to write bad songs to write good songs. That’s a crass way of putting it, but not only is songwriting a numbers game (the more songs you write, the more will have a chance of being better), it’s a reactive process. ‘like u do’ was written directly in reaction to our getting tired of writing darker, slower songs for several weeks – it felt like a massive breath of fresh air when we finally found it. The beat came together in minutes and soon we went from writer’s block doldrums to bouncing around the studio – when Sam sang the hook for the first time it felt so easy and natural.”
