Camp Flog Gnaw was ready for Frank Ocean but we got Drake.
Tyler, The Creator’s annual LA festival ended abruptly last night after Drake was booed off stage following his appearance as the surprise headliner. In what may have been the most tone deaf booking in the festival’s history, Tyler welcomed Drake to the stage after warming up the crowd by bringing out A$AP Rocky and Lil Uzi Vert to play a pair of songs each. Tyler introduced Drake as his third “friend” and insinuated that he would only be playing a few songs. Drake doubled down on this by adding that Tyler asked him to only play two or three songs but wanted to see if the crowd would be willing to let him play a few more. Their answer was swift: No. By the time it was over Drake had played nine songs, half of his reported set. He sulked off stage with a “I go by the name of Drake,” back to Millie’s DM’s. The attendees were definitely waiting for Frank, but trying to foist Drake on a crowd that just one year earlier chanted “Fuck Drake” during Pusha T‘s set is a plain dumb move.
